Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is a landmark piece of wordless longing and quiet intensity. Bay Area native Oliver Herbert performs Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1, a work that unfolds in a single continuous movement, shifting seamlessly between urgency and repose. Closing the performance, Mahler’s ethereal Symphony No. 4 features a soprano in its final movement, which delivers a radiant and transcendent ending.

Program

SERGEI RACHMANINOFF: Vocalise in E minor for Soprano and Orchestra, Opus 34/14
CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS: Concerto No. 1 in A minor for Cello and Orchestra, Opus 33
GUSTAV MAHLER: Symphony No. 4 in G major for Soprano and Orchestra
