Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is a landmark piece of wordless longing and quiet intensity. Bay Area native Oliver Herbert performs Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1, a work that unfolds in a single continuous movement, shifting seamlessly between urgency and repose. Closing the performance, Mahler’s ethereal Symphony No. 4 features a soprano in its final movement, which delivers a radiant and transcendent ending.
