Bachgrounder lecture 35 minutes before each concert

With flowers fully in bloom, Circa 1600 will bask in the colors, textures, and sounds of spring! Given quite an abundance of musical buds to pick, we will carefully arrange our bouquet with Claudio Monteverdi, Orlando Gibbons, and Heinrich Schütz, among many other favorites. With our roots firmly planted in early music, we will also explore how these composers pollinated their musical ideas beyond the Renaissance and Baroque periods by featuring composers like Johannes Brahms (a great lover of the outdoors), Charles Villiers Stanford’s serene setting of The Blue Bird, and more.

Community Partner: Petaluma Bounty

On our bookshelf: The Serviceberry: Abundance/Reciprocity in the Natural World (Robin Wall Kimmerer)

Circa 1600 is our mixed chamber choir, exploring the rich intersection of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. The group’s core repertoire spans the 16th and 17th centuries, with excursions back into the 15th century and forward to J.S. Bach. The ensemble’s artistic vision is shaped by the works of Josquin Desprez, Claudio Monteverdi, Heinrich Schütz and their contemporaries, bringing early music vividly to life.
