Harold and Paula, both originally from different parts of the Los Angeles area, relocated to Sonoma County at different times in each of their lives in search of a change of pace, new scenery, and the educational opportunities provided by Sonoma State University. Their paths first crossed in 1978 while working together at the downtown branch of the Sonoma County Library in Santa Rosa, where they quickly discovered many shared interests. In 1980, the couple moved back to Southern California to continue their education and begin a family.
Harold holds degrees in English and Mechanical Engineering, while Paula earned a degree in Psychology, with graduate studies in Industrial Psychology. Professionally, Harold spent his career in tech, working for a major company headquartered in Cupertino, while Paula dedicated her career to education, working with children of all ages.
For Paula, growing up in Los Angeles meant being part of a family tradition that involved attending Community Concerts, a now-defunct program that brought world-class musicians to the area. These concerts were a source of inspiration for Paula and her sister from an early age. Harold’s family, too, embraced a wide range of music, and Harold even spent his summers working on the clean-up crew at the Hollywood Bowl, where he had the chance to hear many rehearsals for upcoming performances.
The couple began attending concerts at the Green Music Center after returning to Sonoma County in 2023. Shows they’ve attended this season range from classical artists like the Australian Chamber Orchestra and Emanuel Ax, to popular artists like Rosanne Cash and Andy Grammer, to Sonoma Guitar Series performances, to world music artists like Vanessa Sanchez y La Mezcla and Okaidja Afroso, and more. Paula shared, “I avoid reading about the artists and upcoming programs prior to attending concerts because I want to be surprised as the evening unfolds. Even for artists I’ve seen before, they often bring new material or approach their signature pieces from a different perspective. Never disappointed, I walk away each evening feeling like I’ve received more than my fair share of enrichment.”
Harold and Paula are passionate about supporting the Green Music Center through their donations, ensuring the center can continue offering unique and enriching experiences to the community. As Paula puts it, “Music is the universal language; we need more opportunities to communicate heart-felt connections with each other.” For them, listening to original and authentic works provides a sense of grounding, and the Green Music Center’s involvement with students of all ages completes the circle of artistic engagement.
Their commitment to the Green Music Center reflects a deep appreciation for the arts and the vital role it plays in fostering connection and cultural enrichment within Sonoma County. Through their support, Harold and Paula help ensure that the community can continue to experience the joy and inspiration that music brings.
