OPERA IN CONCERT: MOZART’S MAGIC FLUTE

One of the many special gifts Music Director Francesco Lecce-Chong brings to the Santa Rosa Symphony is his love of—and experience with—opera. Sharing the Symphony’s commitment to community engagement, Francesco has invited ArtQuest at Santa Rosa High School to participate in this very special event. More than a dozen opera singers will share the stage with a chorus and the orchestra for a concert version of Mozart’s most popular opera. The colorful and engaging music of The Magic Flute encompasses all the elements of a good fairytale with rich characters, beautifully drawn by Mozart’s music.

An angry Queen of the Night manipulates a young, handsome prince into rescuing her daughter Pamina, who has been captured by the high priest Sarastro. Mysterious ladies sent by the Queen give Prince Tamino a magic flute that transmutes sorrow to joy, and to Papageno, his reluctant companion, magic bells for protection. What begins as a rescue mission ends in enlightenment, renewal, the triumph of good over evil, and for Pamina, Tamino and Papageno, even true love.
